Thornton Oaks Lifestyle
Thornton Oaks Retirement Community is nestled in 29 wooded acres in the heart of Brunswick, Maine. Just blocks from Bowdoin College and a bustling downtown, we’re also bordered by nature trails that wind through the trees and crisscross scenic Mere Brook.
Residents regularly walk the trails to the weekly market at Crystal Spring Farm, acclaimed for its organic fruits and vegetables, flowers, meat, fish, baked goods, and other artisanal treats. A short walk in the other direction reveals historic homes, boutiques of every stripe, a movie theater, Curtis Memorial Library, and a choice of restaurants that has made Brunswick a culinary destination.
We’re minutes from coastal waters with easy access to Maine’s many points of interest, near and far. Portland and its international jetport, are a half-hour drive. And Freeport, famous for L.L.Bean and outlet shopping, is 15 minutes away.
A Vibrant Community among the Oaks
Our campus is home to 46 cottages and 99 one- and two-bedroom apartments, all smartly laid out for comfort and livability, with large living/dining room combinations, fully equipped kitchens, and bedrooms with walk-in closets. Residents may choose to dine with their friends and neighbors in our main building, Matthew Terrace. Here, the two-story rotunda, with its grand piano, is the setting for parties and concerts. The building also houses our library, art and exercise rooms, sunroom and deck, large multi-purpose room, and a fireplace lounge where residents enjoy conversation and camaraderie.
Most importantly, Thornton Oaks is a vibrant community of people who have lived interesting lives, and who nourish a warm, neighborly atmosphere among the Oaks. Residents are also instrumental in planning and shaping community events. The calendar is filled with daily activities, from book groups and bridge parties to foreign affairs lectures and flower arranging. The Thornton Oaks shuttle bus makes frequent trips to the Bowdoin College pool and local shopping centers, as well as cultural excursions to Portland and Boston.
